Selected existing board ends are removed at staggered locations so compatible new boards can interlock with the retained floor instead of meeting it at one straight seam. Feasibility depends on the existing flooring's species, dimensions, construction, direction, fastening, and condition.
The installation used unfinished 2 1/4-inch Select & Better solid red oak supplied as NRF material. A compatible unfinished product allowed the new section to be woven into the intact hardwood before later sanding and refinishing.
