Before the project
A little planning helps the work start smoothly, keeps the site safer, and protects the finished result.
Preparation checklist
Your final scheduling notes and proposal take priority; this guide helps you know what to expect.
Remove belongings, electronics, linens, and fragile items. Confirm furniture moving and reset, disassembly, flooring removal and disposal, and any appliance or plumbing work. Identify heavy or connected items and who protects adjacent rooms from cutting, fastening, sanding, and normal project noise.
Keep entrances, halls, stairs, elevators, and work routes open. Share parking, keys or codes, building rules, work hours, and a day-of contact. Plan separate areas for children and pets, and discuss ventilation, odor sensitivities, and room access where adhesives or finishes are used.
Report leaks, drainage, recurring dampness, prior damage, old adhesive, and concealed heating. Resolve known water problems before covering them. The space should be enclosed, moisture-producing work such as plaster, concrete, paint, and drywall compound dry as required, and permanent heating or cooling operating near expected living conditions. Agree how conditions uncovered after removal will be documented, priced, and approved.
Use the flooring maker's requirements for storage location, support, stacking, carton opening, and any minimum adjustment time. Solid and engineered products may differ. Opening every carton or waiting a fixed number of days does not establish acclimation. Installation proceeds when the documented product and site conditions qualify; otherwise the conditions or schedule must change.
Agree on doors, trim, appliances, furniture delivery, and responsibility for protecting the floor during later trades. For site finishing, name the stain, sealer, coats, sheen, sample approval, and occupancy plan. Walking, furniture, rugs, pets, cleaning, and full cure can have separate dates; use the selected adhesive and finish instructions rather than one completion-day promise.
