The problem
Stairs take more concentrated foot traffic than any other surface in a house, and the center of each tread wears first. A runner protects that main walking path while leaving the hardwood visible on both sides. It also cushions each step and quiets footfall — two things bare hardwood stairs can't offer.
This Glastonbury staircase was ready for installation, so no flooring removal or stair preparation was needed. The crew installed a 28-inch NRF Select Sicily patterned runner in Palermo, centered on the runner sections, across 13 stairs using the Hollywood method, with new carpet pad in the fitted system. Binding was coordinated through a South Windsor fabrication partner, and a matching 8-foot-9-inch hallway runner completed the scope — all finished in a few hours during one day.
The choice here was a centered runner rather than wall-to-wall stair carpet: the narrower width keeps hardwood borders exposed along both sides of the staircase for a tailored look, and the matching hallway runner carries the same pattern into the adjoining space.
