The problem
The kitchen in this Meriden home had an older sheet vinyl floor laid over a concrete slab, and the homeowners wanted a marble-look replacement. When a floating rigid-core floor goes in, the critical question is the surface underneath: a floating floor locks together and rests on top of the existing surface rather than being glued or nailed down, so it needs that surface to be clean, dry, flat, and stable.
Here the existing sheet vinyl met that bar. The crew reviewed it, found it sufficiently flat for the selected floating system, and kept it in place — which meant the verified scope needed no patching, leveling, or other additional surface preparation before the new floor went down.
The decision was between tearing out the old floor and installing over it. Because the sheet vinyl was secure and flat, a tear-out would have added disposal and subfloor work without changing the finished result, so the practical call was a floating installation over the retained vinyl. The Karndean Korlok Select Brunella Marble rigid-core tile was installed as the new floating kitchen floor in half a day.
Project overview
In August 2026, Floors Now completed a half-day residential kitchen flooring project in Meriden using Karndean Korlok Select Brunella Marble RKT3013-G. The 18-by-24-inch rigid-core luxury vinyl tile was installed as a floating floor over the existing sheet vinyl on the concrete slab after the surface was found sufficiently flat for the selected system. Floors Now supplied 157 square feet of material; that figure represents supplied material rather than the exact installed coverage. The coordinated scope also included moving and resetting two appliances, removing and reinstalling 30 linear feet of existing baseboard, installing 32 linear feet of new primed quarter-round, and completing the adjoining edges with one T-molding and one threshold.

We keep it when the existing surface is secure and flat enough for the selected floor. In this kitchen the sheet vinyl over the concrete slab was sufficiently flat, so the verified scope needed no patching or leveling. When the existing floor is damaged, loose, or uneven, removal is the better call.
