Replace the old kitchen flooring with stone-look gluedown luxury vinyl tile over new Ultraply underlayment

The problem
The old flooring in this New Britain kitchen was ready to go, and the replacement was Karndean Opus Terra SP212 — a stone-look luxury vinyl tile that is fully glued down rather than clicked together. A full-spread glue bond makes sense in a kitchen, where spills and daily traffic test a floor constantly: each tile adheres to the prepared surface, and there is no grout to stain or crumble.
A gluedown floor is only as good as the surface it bonds to, so the preparation was the core of the project. After the old kitchen flooring was removed, the crew installed eight 4-by-8-foot Ultraply underlayment panels and completed surface preparation with Planiprep SC before the 265 square feet of LVT went down with LVT adhesive.
Kitchens also come with logistics: two appliances were moved for the installation, 14 pieces of cove base were installed with cove-base adhesive, and the edges were finished with one reducer, one threshold or end cap, and a stair nose at the kitchen-to-landing edge. No flooring was installed on the landing or stairs — the transitions were planned to join the new kitchen floor to the existing surfaces there.

In August 2026, Floors Now completed a 265-square-foot kitchen flooring project in New Britain. The crew removed the old kitchen flooring, installed Ultraply underlayment, used Planiprep SC for surface preparation, moved two appliances, and adhered Karndean Opus Terra SP212 LVT across the kitchen. Fourteen pieces of cove base, one reducer, one threshold or end cap, and one stair nose at the kitchen-to-landing edge completed the work. The adjoining landing and stairs were not part of the flooring installation.

Common questions
We installed the 265 square feet of Karndean Opus Terra SP212 fully glued down with LVT adhesive and no grout — each tile bonds directly to the prepared surface. In a kitchen that sees daily spills and traffic, that full-spread bond and the stone-look tile design give a tile appearance without grout lines to maintain.

Not on this project. The Opus Terra SP212 was installed with no grout — the stone look comes from the tile design itself, and the full-spread adhesive bonds each of the 265 square feet directly to the prepared underlayment.
Cove base is the finished trim where the floor meets the wall or cabinets. We installed 14 cove-base pieces with cove-base adhesive around this kitchen — it covers the flooring edge and gives spills a clean, finished surface instead of an exposed cut edge.
